10mm VS .357 Magnum Winchester Silvertip Gel Test

I know the 10mm semiauto pistol has become somewhat popular for predator protection (e.g., bears), but I also have to remark that I see absolutely no advantage over the 450 SMC in 45ACP, which instead of 170 grains at 1235 FPS is 230 grains at 1120 FPS, with only a change to the spring in a 1911. More to the point, I’ll keep my 450 SMC.

Some of the 450 SMC loads are pushing 1100 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. The 230 grain loads are easily over 900 ft lbs. So for serious predator defense between 357 mag, 10 mm and 450 SMC, it is the 450 SMC for the win.
The 10mm does give you more rounds through a Glock. If it is primarily a bear defense gun though I doubt that would matter. If attacked by a grizzly you are probably not going to have time shoot fifteen rounds. More like maybe three or four.
If it is a combination of predator defense (except big brown bears) and two legged predators in the woods then the 10mm Glock is a good choice. All of this of course is only IMHO.

@George 1,
You know, I had though that the 450 SMC would be a “bear” to shoot. There is a wee bit more recoil, but I can still get back on target within a half second.

Herschel,
It is a great round for sure. I would have one if I could afford the fancy Dan Wesson 45.

That’s not .45 ACP, that’s .45 Super, and edging into low-end .460 Rowland.
.45 ACP is 230 grains at 830 or 850 FPS. That’s the *definition* of .45
ACP, set by the US Army’s quartermaster corps. Your hotrod ammo may chamber and fire, but it’s not ACP.
The “9mm vs. .45” guys like to play that game, using crazy 9mm+P++ loaded out into “hot .38 Super” territory, and comparing that to Army hardball.
Again, if it doesn’t meet NATO or German military spec, it’s not 9×19 or 9mm Parabellum.

@TRX,
Sigh.
Yes. And 450 SMC shot out of a .45ACP handgun will reach 1120 FPS. Read again.
