Ukranian Troops Using A Wood Heater In Their Bunker
BY Herschel Smith2 years, 10 months ago
There are a thousand political machinations we could discuss, but this one thing interested me as I looked at this photo (I am after all an engineer and logistics aficionado). Ukranian troops are using a wood burning heater in their bunker (at least I think it would be wood burning, with a roll-up stack/flue). At least, I think that’s what it is. It may not be wise to mount that so close to anything. A soldier is cleaning his weapon.

A foreign page says four Russian armies moving that way and we have Von Clausewitz at the helm with Patton’s third army. (not)

Herschel: I can think of two advantages to a wood stove:
1) It is EMP proof;
2) It is less likely to cause a fire from spilled liquid fuel.
We used diesel-fueled Yukon stoves in our 10-man arctic tents when I served in Alaska (Army Infantry, 1988-1992). Over time the tent fabric absorbed the fuel that leaked from the crappy US 5-gallon cans that were bundled with the tent and stove on the squad sleds during movement.
Occasionally, once in bivouac with the stove roaring away, a squad tent would go up in flames if the spark arrestors at the top of the stack failed.
Wood-fueled stoves would seem to be a safer bet.

Yep. I agree. Tents in the winter with wood stoves are becoming well-used, even among backpackers.
At least I THINK that’s a wood stove. I left room for a reader to correct me if it’s not.

When training in Norway, north of the Artic Circle in 1989 wood stoves were our only source of heat
