Lever vs Hammer: 30-30 Hornady Lever Evolution & Federal Premium HammerDown
BY Herschel Smith1 year, 1 month ago
This seems to be an ongoing theme with the red tip straight wall cartridges Hornady makes. They shatter into hundreds of pieces of lead. This ruins meat. They cannot be used for hunting like that. They must be redesigned. Fabricate them out of copper, perhaps. Do something different than ruin meat.

Sometimes you have to wonder if that trick Hornady lever ammo is a solution in search of a problem. I recently sighted in some .30-30 round nose at 100 yards and was shocked at how accurate it was. I don’t plan on shooting it much past that, but if I did, the old trick was to handload some 150 spitzers into your .30-30 cases and put one in the chamber and one in the mag so that setting off a primer was a non-issue. You had a two-shot deer rifle, and realistically, how many times do you need to take more than two on a deer? if you’re dumping the entire five-round mag at it you probably missed it or gut shot it anyway.

The Hornady would be a good coyote or lion round. Not too keen on the exploding bullet for meat, either.
